Now i'm considering Tidal.Īs far as i can see the only thing the 'Plus' subscription gets me is the 'better' MQA format 'Master' files. Amazon for it's terrible software with huge differences in functionality across different devices or Spotify's horrible (comparatively) sound quality but best-in-class software. I just cannot make up my mind which of these i hate more. I've been switching a lot between Amazon Music HD and Spotify in recent months. But in the end, if I put my entire music library on shuffle, I wouldn't be able to say what format any individual file I was listening to was in. I taught myself how to hear compression artifacts, and blind-tested regularly to confirm the differences between lossless and lossy. I used to care a lot more about music formats when I started. Also consider buying lossless on sites like Qobuz and Bandcamp it's usually about the same price as buying lossy. I'd suggest looking at Apple Music for a lossless alternative if you haven't already. Overall, MQA is another lossy format – arguably higher quality than other lossy formats and subjectively better-sounding to some listeners than even lossless audio (if the marketing is to be believed) – but still a lossy format (and one locked behind shady monetization practices). Technically the same is true of high bitrate opus and AAC, provided they are derived from the same PCM master. Whether the difference between MQA and PCM is audible is up in the air, but at the very least it is extremely unlikely that a standard listener with normal content will be able to tell any difference. One could say that 44-16 is not perceptually transparent, but it is musically transparent for all practical purposes. They're stuff like square waves, jangling keys, etc. Once you are at lossless 44-16, it is possible to create sounds that can be differentiated from higher rates, but they aren't music.

However, I can't say the same for lossless higher than CD quality.

High quality lossy can be very good, the differences can be subtle, but they are audible with the right material.
